Article for the Minster newsletter
It has given our family great
pleasure to know that Herbert Harold Worley will be remembered at the Minster,
a place which means so much to us. His King’s Penny will now be part of a
Memory box. Sadly none of the 10 Worley children left any descendants apart
from Herbert’s youngest sister who was my grandmother. So it is left to the
Woodhouse family to remember him. It is sad to think that Herbert’s widow and
family had so little to remember him by and were unable to visit his grave. His
name is on the St Michael le Belfry war memorial and engraved on the Worley
headstone in York cemetery.
It is wonderful to think
that children will remember Herbert and write messages to him and record his
name on their poppies in the wreath. Herbert and my grandfather’s cousin Frank
Woodhouse are both recorded in the King’s Book – a truly magnificent book and
Edwin Ridsdale Tate, who’s sister adopted my grandfather, designed the cover of
the Book. My father Francis Herbert Woodhouse was named after his uncle and
remained a proud York man throughout his life. I am very pleased that the Penny
is not sitting in a box in a cupboard but being used for this excellent
purpose. We must never forget the sacrifice of so many.

The King's Penny
We took the King's Penny to York Minster and it is now on loan for 10 years. I was very glad I had taken my album as Esther scanned numerous photos and postcards from it for the box to show children. The King's Book is now magnificently displayed downstairs. When we visited the Castle museum I put on the blackboard the details of Herbert and what we had done. We also passed the York Wat memorial.
